A late-night police chase down Highway 55 devolved into a hot and dangerous standoff Thursday night, culminating in an exchange of gunfire after the suspect allegedly attempted to flee and brandished a gun on the responding officers.

The whole thing started innocently enough as a traffic stop, where officers witnessed a vehicle behaving erratically and tried to pull it over. Instead of pulling over, however, the suspect hit the gas, starting up a high-speed chase over several miles of Highway 55. Police scrambled other units quickly onto the road to track the movements of the suspect, and out of concern for dangerous speeds and refusal by the suspect to give in, police called in a helicopter to assist from above.

The pursuit intensified as police devised a maneuver that would safely box in the fleeing vehicle. Minutes later, police had the suspect's car boxed on a part of Highway 55. Realizing the vehicle was now unable to maneuver further, the suspect gave up on the car and fled on foot toward a nearby pedestrian tunnel running beneath the highway.

Eyewitnesses around reported that they heard the police shouting commands as they pursued the suspect into the dark tunnel. It was at this stage, confirmed authorities, that the man allegedly pulled a gun and pointed it in the direction of the approaching officers. In response to what was viewed as a threat, the police opened fire on the suspect, hitting him several times. He is bleeding profusely, but no recent update on his condition has been released, and no statement has been made if the injuries are fatal.

Responding medics arrived at the scene immediately after the incident. The injured suspect was rushed to the hospital immediately for emergency treatment. None of the law enforcement officers were injured in the altercation.

Events on Thursday prompted a partial closure of Highway 55 as investigators processed evidence and studied the crime scene. Residents were questioning just how often and exactly what kinds of high-speed pursuits across the Metro occur, with calls for rethinking pursuit policies to avoid such dangerous confrontations.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available from relevant authorities.
