Seattle, WA – December 19, 2024
Seattle residents woke up this morning to a blanket of snow-an early big snowfall this season and possibly a harbinger of the white Christmas many in Seattle have longed for. In fact, the wintry weather made the streets and parks into a picture postcard scene. But it came with some challenges, primarily for those driving.
The snowfall began during the early hours and has not stopped since, making the roads slushy and treacherous. WSP has replied by increasing speed traps along Highways like Highway 55 to ensure that people start taking extra care while traveling. Authorities have called on drivers to be cautious; these include reminding motorists to lessen their speeds and increase space between vehicles to avoid traffic congestion.

But while the snow caused a few inconveniences, it also brought much holiday cheer to the city. Children built snowmen and sled down hills at local parks, while residents flooded social media with photos of landmarks draped in snow. And for many, this rare sight of snow in Seattle this month has raised their hopes of having a white Christmas-an event that has last occurred officially in 2008.

Weather forecasters say cold enough temperatures could stick around and keep snow on the ground until the holiday. However, mixed precipitation toward the end of the week could cause some melting of the accumulation.
Snow or no snow, this snowfall has brought a glimpse of beauty and caution to the Emerald City-a holiday season not to forget.
